Steps for immediate stress relief

We need some stress to perform, to be on time and to do our best especially if there are deadlines to fulfill. BUT very often things heap up and before we know it we sweat, or have racing unstoppable thoughts, we even stop breathing, get a headache or a stiff neck or we simply get grumpy and short tempered. When these or similar signs appear you need to:

1. take a break and breathe 

There are many breathing techniques but the first step is recognising that your breathing might have become shallow. So take the deepest breath you have taken all day - hold 1.2.3 counts and let it all out. After that try and find a deeper rhythm of breathing.

2.take a break and drink 

Start with drinking some sips of water, (stress often causes a dry mouth which in turn creates more stress and tightness in the jaw) or make a calming herbal tea or eat a fruit or veggie sticks and chew it slowly and savor it. 

3. take a break and move 

Do a few slow shoulder and neck stretches at your desks for starters or go outside, go for a walk, gaze up on a high tree and see the branches swaying or lie flat on your back and look at the clouds.

Do something you really love and that relaxes you, some people colour-in, some people read, some people even do weeding or baking,  (others would find this stressfull) all of these let your mind relax and bring a difference in your outlook on life. 

4. take a break and release 

Do an aerobic sport like dancing, running, cycling, yoga, swimming, boxing, horse riding : they all can release the tightness you feel. Play with the dog or a cat. You could scream if you are very frustrated to let it all out, but do it in a cushion if you do not want to alert the neighbourhood. You could paint with thick stokes, you could play drum or throw some darts. Other techniques are possible however it depend on the persons needs.
